Players talk in shapes, not coordinates. An OPEN shape has room to grow on both sides; a SLEEPING shape is capped on one, and the cap decides everything about how it may ever fight. These two black stones are an open two: on their own they threaten nothing, yet they are the seed of every win — the move that grows them into an open three creates the first shape the opponent must answer. Both extensions work today because the ends are symmetric; the day the ends stop looking equal is the day you start playing real gomoku. Grow it.
Create an open three.
Finish this step to move on.
