Shosei 疏星, the 'sparse star', is the balanced DIRECT opening: black's third leaps to the far corner of the 5×5 zone, one empty point diagonally from the centre on the white side. Nothing is decided — theory calls it close to even, and under fifth-move rules it is a favourite of players who trust their middlegame. Balanced does not mean soft: black's two stones form a jump pair with a gap in the middle, and white's fourth must decide what to do about it. You are WHITE.
